Nearly half of Farmers Branch’s residents are Hispanic but there are no Hispanics on the city council. So, the city is being sued. The lawsuit seeks to force the city to institute single-member districts to elect City Council members. Proponents says at-large districts, as currently used in Farmers Branch, put minorities at a dis-advantage. City Manager Gary Greer notes that the city prevailed in a similar suit before. Greer also points out that this action is brought by the same law firm that has sued the city several times before, including a high-profile case about an ordinance that bans landlords from renting to illegal immigrants.
