Lawsuit Possible After School Reads Students Text Messages

A father from Irving is threatening to file a federal lawsuit against the school district because he says administrators at MacArthur High School violated his daughter’s constitutional rights.  The complaint stems from an incident this Spring where John Beaird says his 16 year-old daughter was forced to hand over her cell phone so vice principals at the school could read text messages.  The district says administrators were trying to get to the bottom of a fight over a car-keying incident, and that the girl volunteered the phone.  Beaird says his daughter was ordered to give up the phone.  The school board is scheduled to decide whether to take any action on Beaird’s complaint at tonight’s meeting.
