A south Texas school district has decided not to help fund a documentary, planned by actor Edward James Olmos, about the success of its students playing chess.
Olmos in February helped pitch the project to the Brownsville Independent School District, but the district’s board of trustees could not legally donate public funds for the project.
The board sought bids to produce the movie, but the production company Olmos partnered with did not come in with the lowest bid.
The Brownsville Herald reports the board voted Tuesday not to get involved at all.
The district’s chess program was recently featured on the HBO program “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel.”
