The state has been working to get final permissions to fly drones over South Texas and the border region. DPS and Homeland Security Director Steve McCraw hopes that will come soon. “We will continue to work the FAA. We’re hoping to get approval within the next three months.” McCraw says DPS has four drones ready to fly right now, two on loan from the federal government. He says what’s lacking in permission to fly them at the 300, 1000 and 3000 foot levels.
