The seemingly endless days of high heat has forced some people to choose between paying the rent and paying their electric bill. On day 14 of triple digit temperatures, many people are reaching out to 211 for help. Tarrant County’s 211 call center says aid requests for the first 2 weeks in August rose 26 percent compared to last year, and calls for fans and air conditioners tripled. Dr. Sandra Parker of the Tarrant County Public Health Department says the heat is a public health concern, and that if you can’t afford to keep cool in your home go to a mall, senior center, library or anywhere else with air conditioning. Those calling the Dallas area 211 center to find cooling centers rose 400 percent just since last month. If you need help paying your bills or just need to find a cooling center click here.
