There are some changes for your kids this school year, especially for those entering middle and high school.  For the first time a fine arts course is required for middle school students.  Associate Education Commissioner for Standards and Programs Anita Givens says the basics like social studies, science, math and English have always been required “but a specific course had not been required at middle school prior to this one.”  Givens says entering high school freshman have some decisions to make too because of new graduation requirements.  There too a fine arts course is required and there are more chances to take electives along with the basics so students can be a little adventurous and try some new classes.
