Several DART riders were caught on a burning bus yesterday. They say they can still feel the panic trying to flee as black smoke filled the cabin. The DART bus caught fire near the Old Red Courthouse in downtown Dallas. Passengers and witnesses on the street described the frenzied stampede as riders shouted “FIRE.” To the rear, people shoved against one another as they pushed their way out a back door that appeared to be jammed. The door was finally broken open, sending passengers tumbling out. Dallas Fire-Rescue says there were 17 people aboard and everyone was okay, although two people were treated at the scene for what appeared to be minor injuries. DART says the fire started in the engine compartment, but the exact cause is not yet known.
