DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – The Dallas Police Child Abuse Unit has arrested a man they say scalded a 16-month-old boy.

Police arrested Carlnelus Delaney Simmons for Injury to a Child, a first-degree felony charge. Simmons is the boyfriend of the child’s mother.

Police were called to Parkland Hospital when an ambulance brought a small boy to the emergency room with serious burns. The boy has what appear to be hot-water burns covering both legs and buttocks and his right hand and wrist. In addition to the burns, the child also had bruises on the left side of his face.

Investigators later spoke with Simmons, 37, and arrested him in connection with the case.

Police believe the child was injured at an apartment in the 8100 block of Skillman Street. The boy’s mother was not at home at the time.

The injured boy remains in the Parkland Hospital Burn Unit.

Dallas police detectives and Child Protective Services are both investigating the case.
