DALLAS (AP) – Dallas police say a 28-year-old man accidentally shot his friend in the face, killing him New Year’s morning.

Sr. Cpl. Kevin Janse  says the man was inside a home in the 10000 block of Barone Circle, drinking with several others around 3:40 a.m. Saturday when he picked up a hand gun and it discharged.

The man called 9-1-1 and did not flee.

Twenty-nine-year-old Joshua Joe Brown of Abilene was struck in the face and taken to a Dallas hospital where he died, police said.

Police did not name the shooter. He was not arrested.

The case will be referred to a grand jury.
