Mavs Center Ajinca Sent Back To Hotel Amid Trade Talk

CHICAGO (AP) – The Dallas Mavericks sent center Alexis Ajinca back to the team’s hotel on Thursday as a possible prelude to a trade that would enable them to sign veteran forward Peja Stojakovic.

Speaking before the Mavericks’ game against the Bulls, Dallas head coach Rick Carlisle said, “All I can say this point is that Peja Stojakovic has been waived. We’re one of many teams that has interest in him, so we’ll see what happens with that.

“Ajinca is not here tonight because he’s inactive. We’ve sent him to the hotel because there is a possibility that he will be traded. … Nothing has happened yet and I’m not sure anything is going to happen tonight.”

Stojakovic agreed to a buyout of his contract with the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday, making him a free agent.

“With Stojakovic, you’re talking about one of the great shooters,” Carlisle said. “There are a lot of teams that are going to be interested.”

Dallas has been searching for help at the small forward position since starter Caron Butler went down with a season-ending knee injury on Jan. 1. Butler was averaging 15 points and 30 minutes per game.

Ajinca, a third-year player out of France, has averaged 2.9 points and 1.7 rebounds over 10 games with Dallas. Since the Mavericks are carrying the league maximum of 15 players on the roster, they would need to open a roster spot to make room for Stojakovic.

Stojakovic, a 12-year veteran, averaged 8.1 points in eight games this season with Toronto and New Orleans and is shooting 48.4 percent from 3-point range.

Peja Stojakovic was a decent player when he played for SACRAMENTO,the guy could shoot lights out…but now…he’s just average, and that seems to be the route the Mavs always take. For some odd reason,we pick up players who before their arrival in Dallas were “Beast” for their previous teams, but once they get here..they Wuss out, barely giving us 8-12pts a night. I just dont understand that at all,Caron Butler doesnt even play up to the level he did in Washington…primarily due to injury but also because of laziness..We need someone to pick up the slack when Dirk is uncapable of playing and as of now we’re nowhere close to it.

For all the people out there who say get rid of Dirk because he’s weak and isn’t a leader. Who stepped up when Dirk went out? We were on top before he got hurt and when he went out it was a chance for someone else to shine and show they could do it but instead they fell apart. He had to get better and come back so we could start winning again. Everyone blames Dirk for the loss in the finals but NO one else stepped up to help him either. One person alone can’t win, not even Labron. That’s why he left Cleveland. If Stojakovic can help Dirk then get him.

Couldn’t agree more Red. We need to quit talking about how this team has chemistry and get some “hungry” players in here that want to win championships. So tired of seeing JET missing 3’s and playing no D.

NO more average players who cant create their own baskets,we dont need anymore shooters. we have enough of them, who are seemingly doing a pretty well job. Peja is a decent add,but he’s not what we need to replace Butler. we need a hard nose, rim rattling, athletic player who is gonna come in and bring electricity to the arena like chandler did. Dirk can’t do alone, clearly…we’ve lost 5 straight with him out,Peja isnt gonna pick up that slack…Come on Cuban, digg in the wallet and get us something good.
