School Closures Could Lead To Makeup Days

FORT WORTH (KRLD) – If school districts across North Texas cancel any more classes most of the schools will be forced to add extra days to the calendar.

Clint Bond, the Fort Worth ISD spokesperson, says the makeup days for that district would be April 22 and June 6.

“Given that we don’t have snow that often in Texas, we have two days set aside for snow days and then if we have more than that again then we have to figure out how we either make up those days or we get waivers for those days,” he explained.

Bond said the two predetermined make up days were voted on long ago. “Those days are determined by a committee that’s made up of administrators, teachers, and parents, and every year they come up with the school calendar and that goes to the Board of Education for approval.”

If more makeup days are needed the decision will be made by the superintendent and the school board.

During the H1N1 scare Bond says FWISD students received a waiver for missed days and didn’t have to make them up. He says given the scope of the winter storm that could also be a possibility this time.

As a parent of two school age children, I will not take the risk of getting on the icy roads and endanger my family or other f amilies due to unsafe driving conditions. Whether the school district is open or not, we stay home.

  • Regina

It makes more sense to me to add days at the end of the school calendar when we know the roads are definately safer.

  • Robin

I don’t think the issue is going to be the roads by tomorrow or friday, but the rolling blackouts due to electric shortage. I am a teacher and I cannot imagine trying to teach when every two hours I lose electicity for 20-30 minutes.

  • Kristen

I think it will be too icy on tomorrow. I tried to leave the house today, but all the driveways and roads in 76179 are frozen solid. Its not safe.

Make Up Day’s are a better opition to having our children in danger, we have more traffic than normal due to the Super Bowl, but with young driver’s that have never driven in ice/snow it’s not an opition, but to close FWISD>DISD , this would help keep them SAFE!!! Please make the right choice!!
I love my Grandchildren and their Parent’s!!!

  • Sharon

Please, DISD needs to close. I will not take any chances on a icy road

  • jill

I-20 is a horrible mess. I live 15 minutes from the office, and it took me an hour to get here. It’s an skating rink on that highway. I won’t risk coming in tomorrow if they don’t do SOMETHING to that highway.

I believe who ever is in charge of making the school closing decisions should understand that as a parent we are going to make the best decision for our children and if that means keeping our children home another day because the roads are still bad, then that’s what will happen even if they decide to open on Thursday. Be smart and give the weather 1 more day to get better!

  • Essence

Remember, you can make up a few school days, but you cant make up a few lives!

    • Mimi

I would like to personaly .Thank the FWISD & DISD for protecting our children!!!!
      God Bless,

  • Laura
