Dallas, Fort Worth Officials Keep Roads Open

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Stranded motorists complained about the roads Friday.

“There were no warnings,” says Daruis Garner. Garner was heading to work when his Volvo crossed a bridge and careened down a hill wedging between trees. “The road should have been blocked off.”

Dee Sparks is from Michigan. She too was upset.

“There is something that Texans do not do that Michigans do that helps out in this weather,” she said.

Sparks is right.

In states like Michigan, Minnesota, and North Dakota, the Department of Transportation and State Patrol have the authority to “jointly” issue a No Travel Advisory. They can even shut down the interstates.

Minnesota issued a no travel advisory due to a blizzard that hit just before New Year’s Eve.

The Texas Department of Transportation, however, does not have the authority to close down roadways or interstates.

In Texas, the authority is divided among state and local law enforcement agencies. State troopers can close some stretches. County Commissioners decide whether to keep county roads open.

And, in places, like the High Five, in Dallas, the Dallas Police Department makes the decision to shut down or stay open.

Today, although many motorists were stranded there, DPD decided to keep it open.

“This morning was an inconvenience for drivers. Some vehicles got stuck, but there were no injuries involved so we don’t feel we need to punish other drivers who can safely pass on that road,” said Kevin Janse, spokesman for the Dallas Police Department.

In some areas, icicles as large as three feet hung from some overpasses. TxDOT is responsible for knocking those down, but if crews go out to take care of them they have to shut the highway down.

“It concerns me driving underneath it,” said Dusttin Pearson, who just got into town from Nashville, Tenn.

The Fort Worth Police Department also decided to keep its roads open.

“The decision is made based on the safety of our motorist and them having a safe passageway on our roadways,” said Sergeant Paul Criado with the Fort Worth Police Department.

Plano Police and the Denton County Sheriff Departments made similar calls Friday.

Each agency said if the weather had gotten worse, it may have made a decision to shut down.

They all said they make individual calls for their own roadways in their own jurisdictions, but they also work together to make the right call.

They say they all talk and take recommendations from the Texas Department of Transportation. They all rely heavily on reports from officers on the road and TxDOT crews.

Drivers like Arthur Rios are glad those conversations led to no closures Friday. He believes closed roads would have caused a bigger mess.

“I think people would be mad. They would try to take the back roads and that wouldn’t be good,” he said. “They’d be slipping and sliding all over the place.”

The first issue with this story is him stating there was no warnings. Um how about the white stuff falling from the sky? Im really getting tired of these stories of people from the North complaining about how this is being handled and that we are not prepared. News flash northerns, We get it once a year, not every day for the winter. If its so bad, i recommend you just go back to your own state and leave us be. True Native Texans are smart enough to realize that YOU CANT DRIVE ON ICE..

  • billyboy

Funny we are in Texas and I would think that the snow on the ground was a big enough picture for Texans to realize the road were going to suck.

  • Cody

Very few of you people can drive. I’m literally running circles around everyone out here. I could truly commit any crime and no cop could catch me because I can drive over 20 without spinning out, I’ve noticed that the cops can’t even control themselves doing a U turn to help the buses that are in the ditch.

Even if this happens once a year, you are still doing everything wrong and it is fun to watch but also dangerous. This is Super Bowl weekend, I’m from Green Bay and you’re city has a black eye because you couldn’t figure out a contingency plan for this.

  • RP

Spoken like a “true native Texan”….arrogant and stupid.
    .

Most Drivers have no clue how to handle a spin out and sliding during braking issues. As a former Kart champion I lived in this state of driving conditions. Go to a open parking lot and practice what it feels like to have no control and try to avoid it Better yet stay home! Lower air pressure in tires to get more rubber on the road, or make sure you downshift slowly when coming to a stop instead of braking! The super bowl and its monetary rewards far out source the safety of its residents, thats why the roads are open…its disgraceful.

  • Chris

The only roads that had any treatment were the roads you guys were driving on. The rest of the cities in this area has to make do with nothing on the roads. I am sure if I was driving the same roads you were driving I could race you, but driving on ice mixed with frozen oil from the streets to get there puts me in a cautious driving mode to begin with. In regards to committing a crime, Texas is a concealed handgun state, usually when someone is committing a crime around here the Police are called to pick the body up.

  • Glenn

Gee this is such a hoot. People from out of state come to Texas and complain basicly because we had the audacity to have snow and ice messing with their weekend. News flash’ Texas may be kind of AWE inspiring and able to do a lot of big things, but we don’t do weather. And for the “NORTHERN” folks visiting us, we are normally a SOUTHERN state with very little snowfall and usually only one or two ice storms, so we do not have the winter weather equiipment to clear stuck northern drivers from the airport parking lots. Enjoy your full package vacation and the Superbowl.

  • Cody

I’m not in a tourist area, Greenville, Abrams, Belt Line… No treatment. You guys are just being super hesitant and in a lot of cases that is more dangerous. Can’t pass you guys when you pool up and drive 10mph. SUCKS!

Haha, I wasn’t serious about committing a crime but literally… If I got in a high speed chase with these cops in the Dodge Chargers it would be like a comedy routine. I saw one spinning around in circles for no reason.

Don’t hit the gas hard, anticipate braking, don’t make any sudden moves, don’t over react to sliding.

  • Cody

You have the equipment but you use it wrong. I saw a line of 9 plows on 35W, that was a waste and over kill… plus they weren’t even pushing the snow off the road. It was incompetent.

In Waco they were using sand with huge gravel chunks… it wasn’t the right kind of sand… Everything is bigger in Texas, hey its snowing, let put gravel on the freeway!

In Dallas you have minor spin outs where the cops are closing all the lanes. Push the cars to the side and lets keep moving. Some of us have no problem.

In Austin there were cops stopped in the middle of the road on the downside of a hill… dangerous! Use gravity to go down and up hills.

  • Jovina

Instead of telling us to go back north, why not learn from experience? How can you have a super bowl or anything that draws in thousands and say, “put up, and shut up.” You make Texans sound stupid. Why can’t they take the 18-wheelers off the road? Why can’t they tell drivers what is safe and what is not? What is wrong with communicating? Waiting for Dallas County Commissioners to make a decision? Sometimes it is okay to drive. Sometimes it’s not. How many of you knew Thursday that the ice was melting, that it was going to freeze with snow on top of it, and that you better get home before 5 pm? Great day for tow trucks. Thank you, Texans. I guess you want to stay stubborn and ignorant, especially during super bowl for all the world to see. Do you want a return of super bowl?

  • robin fletcher

Agree Glenn. That is what I said yesterday to a bunch of football fanatics who said our imagine depends on Superbowl fans being satisfied. Sickening.

  • Jon

Also funny are the northerners giving tips on driving to people in Texas.

Since living in Minneapolis for three years, the amount of dumb drivers I have seen on the roads is astronomical. Spin outs, unnecessary speeding and tailgating on ice and snow, you name it. Sometimes you can’t control what is happening, even when going 10MPH, if you hit a bad patch of ice, it’s hard to think of all the steps you need to do to stop your car from going crazy.

  • T

Well everyone just take a step back. There was warning that the roads were going to be bad. In for the visitors for the Super Bowl know that cars are not exact same in every state. Texas cars are made for Texas weather conditions not for snow and ice like I know for a fact that cars up north come with some different features than ours do here.So enjoy your self here in Texas as we can not control everything LIKE WEATHER. But we have worked very hard to make sure people ENJOY them selves.

  • MEL FORT WORTH, TEXAS

    Well Said !! T

  • Glenn

    T,

What non Texas cars have bulit in snow plows…lol. That’s just stupid. The only real difference in MFG’ing is Heavy duty batteries and some minor other differences. Texas cars are built like every other car unless you order special equipment

  • Texan

we have tvs in texas and can see how good you cold weather people can drive? in ditches , up one another rear ends, off bridges, pile ups, stranded and freezeing to death, youre right we dont cope with snow and ice very well. but you dont either.

  • CSA

WOW…as a northerner who has now resided in Texas for the last 11 years, all I can say is WOW. Yes, some of our roads were not as cleared as we would have liked them to be, BUT factor in a whole bunch more vehicles on the roads due to Super Bowl tourists that are pouring in from other states, and the fact that these people don’t really know where they are going just made this ice/snow storm seem even worse. Patience was the key word for this past week. This is not normal Texas weather we have had to deal with, but this storm didn’t just hit Texas…..more then 1/2 the country received the same type of weather. All I can say is that if you didn’t like our hospitality then please, do us all a favor and go back home. We survived just fine without the Super Bowl in town and trust me, we will continue surviving just fine after the Super Bowl leaves. For most of us living in Arlington, this has caused more of a headache then the past weeks storms has. Lane closures on a major street that runs north and south through our city….inconvenience but yet we put up with it just so you can come and enjoy your festivities. The good news is that for tomorrow’s big even … rain with a mixture of snow…..WOO HOO … I will be watching from the comfort of my home.

  • Eric

If you don’t like our state then please do leave we never asked you to come here nor go to your state and start criticizing it for mother nature doing. The Texas department transportation gave out warnings not only on the air and radio but also bulletin signs all over the highway and don’t expect the government to babysit we are all grown and have a tendency of common sense so it was up to you if you wanted to go out on the streets don’t blame us “Texans” as you immature people like to call us, for something bad that happened to you on the roadway. So why don’t you people from out of state at least respect us as we respect you for giving you hospitality if not then go back to your state and you can watch the superbowl from your tv.

  • Trish-Ft Worth

I really wish people from up north wouldn’t criticize us for our handling of snow and ice. Here in North Texas we get about one event per year. It would be nice if our visitors gave out some friendly advice based on their experience with snow and ice for months at a time. If we were up north during your one week of 100+ degree weather, we would give you advice based on our double digit days in a row of it. We’d tell you that the hottest time of the day is between 3 and 6 and to try to do what needed to be done before and after then. We’d say to keep yourself hydrated because by the time you feel thirsty you are already starting to dehydrate. We’d ask you to please check on your disabled and elderly to make sure they are ok. I can go on and on, but my point is both weather extremes can and do cause problems that unfortunately can lead to injuries and worse. It would have been nice not to have to hear the ridicule. No one can control the weather, but North Texans have done an awful lot to make your Super Bowl experience the best you can have.

You have the equipment but you use it wrong. I saw a line of 9 plows on 35W, that was a waste and over kill… plus they weren’t even pushing the snow off the road. It was incompetent.

first of all – read this article : http://dfw.cbslocal.com/2011/02/04/state-officials-defend-response-to-winter-storm/ – in this article it specifically states that north texas does not have snow plows and cannot financially warrant having them in north texas for something that only happens here maybe once a year (If that)

therefore, what you saw were not snow plows… they were sand trucks… but obviously you were behind them – and the reason they were not pushing the snow off the highway is again…. because they are NOT SNOW PLOWS…. figured you apparently being from the north could tell the difference…. but then who knows….. and who cares…. when its all over… youll go back to your icebox and things will ironically return to normal…. funny the timing huh…. thanks for bringing it down with you (oozing with sarcasm)

  • Reality Bites

The problem is that we are not prepared for such a thing. Technically we don’t get it other than once a year with maybe a day or two of snow, but never anything like that. Now, hadn’t it been for Super Bowl not one bird would have tweeted it from the roofs in any other part of the country.
Granted that it on average doesn’t happen too often and preparing for all eventualities costs a lot in budgets.

I live in NE Dallas and work in Ft. Worth. That means every week I pay 40 bucks in tolls or more to NTTA to use their George Bush Toll Rd. What have I been paying for all these months prior? Nothing! At least TxDOT seemed to have been a lot better with their maintained roads. NTTA is just a big fat money making blob, that wastes toll bucks on unnecessary things. Like changing their consultant in the middle of a construction period/project, just for the sake of change. Politics over common sense.

  • Reality Bites

Having lived in lots of other parts/states of the country, I have to say that Texas is the most honest state with regard to people that I have ever experienced. You may not agree with opinions, but at least you’re getting it straight up.

  • Reality Bites

Wrong Glenn! Having worked in the manufacturing industry, I can say you that a car from the south is not the same than a car made for the north! There are differences.

  • g

Wow! I would never criticize your snow removal down there. You just don’t have the equipment and the frequency of storms that states like mine do. I live in Michigan, we are pros because we need to be, Winter comes every year and people usually are careful and prepared and know what to do. Your state hardly ever sees snow so of course it would be more diffecult for you to drive in and remove.

We have 10 inches right now, and the roads are bad but come morning they will be clear and dry. Then we can sip our hot cocoa and enjoy how beautiful it is!
