Aguilera Flubs Line Of National Anthem

ARLINGTON (AP) – Christina Aguilera flubbed a line as she belted out the national anthem at the start of the Super Bowl Sunday night.

When she was supposed to sing the line “O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming,” she instead repeated an earlier line, with a slight variation.

She sang “What so proudly we watched at the twilight’s last gleaming,” which is the same line from earlier in the song but with the word ‘watched’ instead of the word ‘hailed.’

The mistake immediately set social networks abuzz with people commenting on the error.

Aguilera’s representative did not immediately return a call and e-mail seeking comment.

She’s not the first person to mess up the lines of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” In 2001, Macy Gray was famously booed for her off-kilter rendition of the national anthem.

She garbled the words at the Pro Football Hall of Fame exhibition game in Canton, Ohio, her home state. She later told The Associated Press: “That was definitely life’s most embarrassing moment.”

She is an American, she know it by heart- line by line whether in a small or big event.

    1. Txn says:

This is a person who started singing the national anthem at events when she was a young child, which I think proves the fact that she knows the words. It seems that she got nervous. Wouldn’t you??

  2. lost remote says:

When was the LAST time you remember ANYONE singing the national anthem at a major sporting event withou making mistakes in the lyrics? I can’t recall even once! And if you’re going to sing it in your musical “style” then it would be better to get it perfectly correct, because it seems like a more glaring mistake and slightly disrespectful too.

  3. billy says:

Why do people make such a fuss over Celebrities making simple mistakes? She is human like everyone else. We all make mistakes. Nobody is perfect. She made a mistake, big deal. There isn’t a perfect person anywhere on this planet.

    1. Donna says:

it’s not because she’s a celebrity, it’s because she is a United States citizen…. NO excuses

      1. Txn says:

Whatever! So, just because someone is anxiousor nervous, and accidentally gets lost in which line they are singing…makes them un-American? Could it be that the emotion behind the song causes people to get nervous? I’ve seen plenty of people singing in church flub the lyrics to well-known hymns – does that make them non-Christians? NO. What Billy was saying is that celebrities or not, they make mistakes just like we all do. It could have been worse (Rosanne Barr, anyone?)

  4. BIGTEX says:

if you dont know the pledge of alligence and the national anthem by heart you should get kicked outta the USA for not being american enough!!!!

    1. Txn says:

That is just dumb. I sure hope we can all live up to your impossible standards of NEVER making a mistake. WOW.

  5. Jesse Dobbs says:

She is an American and a professional. She and everyone else should show some respect for those few minutes and sing the song it the traditional way.

  6. Survon1 says:

I would love to hear her sing a standard version, her voice is amazing!!!!!!1

  7. johnb says:

simple mistake, big deal, her heart wasin the song

  8. Tom says:

WHY DON’T THE PEOPLE RUNNING THESE BIG EVENTS MAKE THE SINGERS DO A DRESS REHERSAL TO MAKE SURE THEY CAN DO A CREDIBLE JOB? AND WHY DON’T THEY TELL THEM TO SING IT STRAIGHT AND NOT TO STIALIZE IT!
IT IS AN INTERNATIONAL EMBARASSMENT WHEN SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAPPENS!

  9. Tom says:

OH YEAH! BY THE WAY, I’LL BET OUR MILITARY FORCES WOULD BE HAPPY TO PROVIDE SINGERS AND BANDS TO HONOR OUR GREAT COUNTRY BY SIGNING OUR ANTHEM AT EVENT SUCH AS THIS! NO BIG “STARS” BUT SOON WE”RE GOING TO HAVE TO ENDURE A RAP VERSION IF SOMEBODY DOESN”T WISE UP!

  10. Deb says:

Actually I think country western singers so the best job with the national anthem. I hate it when they have R&B singers and gospel singers trying to fit the national anthem in to their music. I noticed Christina tried to change up the rhythm of it this evening. Sing it the way it was written. Forgetting the words in that big of crowd on that big of stage is going to happen.

  11. Jerry says:

When you get paid hugh sums od Monet you should do it perfect

  12. russ says:

If you questions her patriotism just watch her video Candy Man.
Guys in uniform would flub the national anthem after seeing this.
The kid was nervous. Whats the big deal?

  13. Janet says:

I can understand her being nervous, and totally understand people are not perfect, but the National Anthem should be ingrained in us. I was raised singing it…. And because she is a professional, maybe she should have made sure she knew the words BEFORE she decided to make it unrecognizable by tune!

  14. Jeff B. says:

She should have had to do an audition (and then be rejected). It was obvious she was thinking more of HOW she was singing it than WHAT she was singing.

  15. Henry says:

Every sinse Whitney Houston sang the Banner all the other artist have been trying to upstage her. She is a pro and has been singing a long time…nerves???? please. Yea, she is human but for the buck she just got paid she needed to sing it right. Heck, if a 7yr old at a basketball game can do it….need I say more???? and Jeff B….spot on bro!!!!!!

    1. So you Know says:

      sorry Henry,
I heard this past week the NFL does NOT pay anyone for their performances during the superbowl…..well they do pay their airfare and hotel, other than that nothing…..black eyed peas -0- Stones last year -0- the artists typically see an uptick of their music being sold the week following the big game which they think is more than fare.

  16. Sweet_tee says:

Her rendition was horrible. Thank God for DVR we just fast forwared right through her. Not to mention why didn’t they have a Texan singing it. My God Kelly Clarkson would have done a much better job. Don’t even get me started on the half time show. They were playing in TX not Pittsburgh. What was up with that awful music. Couldn’t they have found someone better. It was like a bunch of animals jumping around on the stage and Fergie killed “sweet child of mine”. At least Slash rocked it.

  17. Elmer says:

It has been the anthem for only 80 years. Maybe we should change it to a song that is easier to sing.

  18. Sonny says:

All you morons defending her are just plain STUPID! If you don’t know the words to the song then rehearse it or don’t sing it. Why do we always have to have these “celebrities” sing it? They could have gotten Celena Rae who sings the anthem for the Dallas Stars and NEVER makes a mistake and sings it the way it is supposed to be sung. Or even the guy from the Chicago BlackHawks who sung it for the Bears. If you’re too stupid to sing the national anthem then don’t do it. Plus if you’re a real American then learn it. You want to live here and enjoy the privilidges of living in America then show some respect for it!

  19. Charles says:

The national anthem should be sung with more pride for this country. Don’t jack with it! Sing it the way it was supposed to be sung. And maybe then, you wouldn’t mess the words up.

  20. Joan says:

I was so distracted by her vocal gyrations that I hardly noticed she flubbed the words. Why do these singers always have to destroy the National Anthem? They try so hard to put their own spin on it that you can hardly recognize the song. It’s all about them showing off their trills and it shows disrespect to our anthem and our country.

  21. Todd says:

If She wasnt so busy trying to make it her own version, maybe just maybe she would have gotten it right. How embarassing. They should have had the young lady from Glee sing it. She knocked it out of the park. Way to go Christina. You do your country and home town proud. NOT!!!!!!!

  22. llg says:

She was a disgrace, not only didnt know the words, but trying to “make it own” that song you dont “make it your own” you sing it right, or dont sing it at all-
She looked awful and sung even worse!!! Bad pick officials, and yep I know our miltary could have found someone to do 100% better than that mess.

  23. Mike S says:

The difference here folks is she is a professional singer and was paid a large amount of money to make the appearance and perform the song. It’s a completely different standard compared to a local high school kid that was not a celebrity. If you are going to get paid the kind of money she does and she’s a professional, there are really no excuses to make mistakes. I’m sure she made a 6 digit figure for the 2 or 3 minutes she was up there. For that kind of money, yes, it needs to be 100% perfect. Any money she was paid for that appearance should be refunded. I’d be very embarrassed to keep it if I was in her shoes.

  24. Hemroidious says:

Next year they should have Roseann Barr and Prince sing the Anthem in duet. At the end she raises a flag colored skirt and sits on his face. That would really be good.
