Kinsler & Moreland Home Runs Can’t Pass Arizona
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) – Arizona pitcher Micah Owings is standing by in case the Diamondbacks need his bat or even glove.
So far, he hasn’t been called upon. His pitching has been more than enough.
Owings, who has been working out at first base this spring, threw a perfect inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Texas Rangers 3-2 on Ryan Roberts’ run-scoring single in the bottom of the ninth.
Last year, Owings was primarily a reliever for the Cincinnati Reds, but often was used as a pinch hitter by manager Dusty Baker. Now, he’s with the Diamondbacks for the second time after signing as a free agent during the offseason.
Armando Galarraga, also signed in the offseason, was nearly as effective. Galarraga, who missed a perfect game last season with Detroit because of an umpire’s mistake, went three hitless innings, giving up only a walk and a hit batter.
Overall, five Arizona pitchers held the Rangers to only four hits.
Ian Kinsler hit a leadoff homer in the first inning and Mitch Moreland hit one to start the third.
Roberts’ hit off Ryan Tucker followed a single and a stolen base by Willie Bloomquist.
Stephen Drew drove in the first two Diamondbacks’ runs, with a double in the first inning and a sacrifice fly in the third.
