Knox-Henderson Hit & Run Caught On Tape

By Stephanie Lucero, CBS 11 News

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – An Austin woman visiting Dallas was struck by a hit and run driver while walking in a crosswalk on Henderson Avenue last Friday night.  Surveillance video taken by a camera mounted at one of the nearby businesses captured the incident.

Selena Christian, 33, says she and her boyfriend started to cross the street.   “I said, no, let’s use the crosswalk” says Christian.

The video shows how Christian took a few steps into the marked crosswalk when a Chevrolet Tahoe hits her and dragged her about 20 feet.  Christian’s boyfriend, Carson Choate, estimates the Tahoe was traveling 35 to 40 miles per hour.

“I look up and I see that she’s about to get hit and I couldn’t stop it” says Choate.

“I was asking him what happened, what’s going on?” says Christian.  She adds “He said you were hit by a car and I couldn’t believe it”.

The Tahoe brakes momentarily and then it is seen turning the wheels to go around the victim, laying on the ground, and flees.

According to witnesses, a number of people chased the Tahoe on foot, and they were able to get the license plate number of the vehicle.  Texas License plate number KZV 971.   Dallas Police detectives are looking for the vehicle and they say a number of witnesses saw the driver.  If arrested he could be charged with Failing to Stop and Render Aid.  Police say, if convicted, it carries a possible prison sentence of from two to  10 years and $10,000 fine.

Christian is a single mother of five children and she lives in Austin.  She says this is only her second visit to Dallas.  “It would make me feel a lot safer out there and better if they could bring him to justice, find him and make him accountable for doing this” she says.

i hope they catch the driver and ill place bets on that now. however, i noticed that in the tape Christian does not appear to look for oncoming traffic prior to entering the crosswalk. i understand pedistrians have the right of way in crosswalks. but common sense should tell you allways check for traffic anyway since oncoming traffic may not be in a position to stop at a crosswalk that is not regulated. if it is regulated it may require you to hit a button to change the light prior to entering the crosswalk. the driver was wrong for not stopping to render aid.

It would make her feel safer that they bring the guy to justice? He wasn’t aiming at her she walked in front of the vehicle. Single mother of 5? Wow so many story lines here.

  3. Robert says:

Was she drunk? She didn’t even look before she walked into this busy street. It looks like she walked into the street on purpose to get hit. The driver should have stopped. Another idiot.

One question… Why was she the only one that crossed and her boyfriend didn’t? Maybe because their was a vehicle coming??? Idiot… lucky to be alive,

an old 70 year old white man hit her…, come back to this story in a couple days and give me props for solving the mystery.

    1. re: Jr says:

Yes, the car is registered to an older, white, retired man named Dayton Grumbles(from Austin Texas)…doesn’t mean HE did it, but if he wasn’t driving…he should know who had his car that night.

5 kids in austin while she parties… wow,, she looks drunk if she wouldnt of been hit by the first car she would have be the second car cause she didnt stop to look.

  9. why are y’all blaming her? i live at that corner and they are doing construction so all the sidewalks are blocked off and it’s very confusing. There is also a ‘Pedestrian Crossing’ sign on the road before the cross walk to warn drivers of the cross walk. Henderson is a zoo on Friday and Saturday nights and everyone – pedestrians and particularly drivers – need to be aware. The sidewalks are so rocky and uneven and not lit very well – I’m always afraid I’m going to trip and fall and get hit by a driver.

Jaime, im not familuar with that area but based on the videos that appears to be a controlled crosswalk. where you push a button, wait for the light to stop traffic then proceed to cross the street. the lady made no attempt to even stop or look either direction prior to entering the crosswalk. her boyfriend stopped but apparently he was to self absorbed to pay attention to her lack of good judgement to just walk out into moving traffic. the driver is guilty of failing to stop and render aid. the pedestrian is guilty of causing the accident by inattention and negligence. the boyfriend is guilty of using the wrong head to think with. there is no evidence of this “construction” you mention at this point in the road and it isnt at a corner.

      1. darrell says:

i stand corrected, it isnt a controlled crosswalk. but it does not change the event as i stated above based on the video. there is no way the driver could have stopped given the situation and the pedestrians actions.

Classy mom leaving her 5 kids at home in Austin 4 hours away while she parties and gets hammered in Dallas. I’m sure her welfare and child support payments helped to fund her well deserved night out with soon to be baby daddy number 6. Is there anyone who would look at Henderson road (who lives here or not) and think that it is safe to cross? crosswalk or not! Glad her children still have their mother, esp considering she probably doesn’t have a will or trust set up for them. Money has to be used for weekends away with the more important next boyfriend. I pray for her children and the future of our narrow minded self absorbed country. Your children ALWAYS come first!!!!

Wish the news would have mentioned that the pedestrian appeared to be partially at fault for the accident – she did not appear to look and wait (as the boyfriend does) for an appropriate time to cross… why not teach a quick lesson in proper etiquette and LAW?!?
