FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) – Friends and relatives offered their prayers Friday night for the family of a 16-year-old Fort Worth high school student. Jose Guzman died after a fight with another student Friday near the campus of Southwest High School.
“I just can’t believe what happened to him today. I just saw him yesterday. Now today, he’s gone,” Joseph Tomethko said.
Jose Guzman was fatally injured between class periods, just across the street around 10:30 Friday Morning.
“I been knowing him since about maybe 6th grade. When I found out this happened, I was just devastated,” Adam Martin said.
Students received letters for parents that said, “We had a very tragic event take place on our campus today involving two of our students.”
Police said the two students, both members of the school’s ROTC, had taken an argument across the street and outside a city recreation center where it turned into a fight.
Jose Guzman ended up in trouble. The school’s letter to parents explained, “Unfortunately, one of the young men experienced a medical emergency and was pronounced deceased at a local hospital.”
Guzman’s friend, Adam Martin, said, “I hear he had some heart problems in the past. He was taking some medication pills to help him with it.”
The sympathy and support did not go unnoticed by the Guzman family. At the end of Friday night’s mass, Jose’s aunt offered her thanks to all of the students who came or contacted the family with their condolences.
