ARLINGTON (AP/CBSDFW.COM) – A 26-year-old North Texas Marine Corps reservist has been killed in action in Afghanistan.

A Defense Department statement issued Thursday says Staff Sgt. Jeremy D. Smith of Arlington died Wednesday in combat in Helmand province of southern Afghanistan.

Smith was a 2003 graduate of Martin High School in Arlington.  His family says his death is currently under investigation.

He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 23rd Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Marine Forces Reserve based in Houston.  A spokesman for the family says they have traveled to Dover Air Force Base in Maryland to await the return of Smith’s body.

The spokesman said Smith’s body would return to North Texas likely on Monday or Tuesday.  Upon arrival to DFW, the Marine will be honored with a water cannon salute.

Martin High School counselor Susan Kingen said Smith decided to become a Marine after the September 11, 2001 attacks.  He wanted to serve his country, she said.  Kingen says she was proud of the man Smith had become. “He was an awesome, inspiring young man.”

She said he visited her two years ago and thanked her for her guidance. His father called her Thursday to break the news.

Funeral arraignments are planned for Friday.  Smith will received a purple heart at graveside services at Dallas – Fort Worth National Cemetery.

I received this terrible new on 4/6/11 @6:14pm from my Mom who’s Jeremy Dad Best friend, I was speechless and I still cant believe it. to his Dad, Jerry who is like a Uncle to me, I have no words to say, because nothing makes scene, I can’t even call him because it hurt to know in how much pain he is. So I will use this for now to show him that I care and I love him. I will get the strength to talk to you but I cant right now.

    I love you Jerry.

P.S. Billy & SDeather36, Please this is not the place for that.

First off… I wish my husband had full range on your ass because he served with smith, and its people like you that are ignorant about what its like to give up our lives for others. Your lucky they are on foreign soil, because if they were here no on would protect your ungrateful ass… and I’m sure you would have no clue what it means to be a man like they are… you can sit back and say those things, but your the one that relies on obama to pay your way through life while you do nothing…. instead Smith and other men took life on for themselves and our what a “REAL” american is… By the way, I can say these things because we have been at war, and we have the right of voice… all your want is to talk about your rights as a human without thinking of your responsibilities first…

My boyfriend, Sgt. Shields (Pops), also served with Smith in Iraq. When we got the news it we were and still are in disbelief, we had just talked to him not long ago. Smith was a good man, a kick ass Marine, and had a great sense of humor. He was in the middle of writing a pretty great book that we had the privilege of reading. Smith loved to ride (motorcycles) and loved the Corps. If you want to talk smack this isn’t the page to do it on and would be in your best interest to do it some place else, so show a little respect…please. We will see you in Texas “Smitty”, and you may be gone but will never be forgotten.Love, Bobbi Jo Semper Fi

We have been watching the local news here in DFW and it appears that no one seems to realize that SSGT Jeremy Smith had a mother and a wife.

Unfortunately, the media seems to have overlooked the fact that SSGT Jeremy Smith has also left behind his wife Rachel Smith who lost her world when she lost her husband. She and his parents were there in Dover to await his arrival.

We love you Jeremy (mijo) and you will always be in our hearts.

You know the media they ALWAYS get all the details……….thank you susan for bringing that up, I try not to listen to the media too much on things like this because the details are usually just bits and pieces. His dad, mom, and wife all took that long trip to pick him up and they are all in our hearts and prayers.
