WAXAHACHIE (CBSDFW.COM) – A truck driver told authorities Tuesday that he ran his 18-wheeler off Interstate 35 because he choked while drinking soda.
According to Waxahachie Police Chief Chuck Edge, the driver was traveling northbound on I-35 when he took a sip and lost control of his truck.
It skidded down an embankment, slammed into a drainage ditch and shot up on U.S. Highway 287 before coming to a stop between two concrete bridge pillars, Edge said.
The driver suffered minor injuries in the crash. U.S. 287 was closed for a few hours for cleanup and investigation. The highway was reopened Tuesday afternoon.
Edge said none of the roads suffered any structural damage, although the Texas Department of Transportation will have to replace a section of guardrail that the truck took out.
