ROWLETT (CBSDFW.COM) – Police in Rowlett have taken into custody the man they believe beat a woman and then set the house, with her and her two-year-old baby inside, on fire.

Thursday afternoon police were called out to a house fire in the 6300 block of Magnolia Lane. When they arrived they found the house in flames and a woman and her child outside. Callers to 911 told authorities a woman was screaming about “her baby” as she was being dragged out of the house.

Police later discovered that the 27-year-old woman had come home to find Jeffrey Steele, who she knew, burglarizing her house. After being discovered Steele allegedly beat the woman so severely that she lost consciousness and then set the house on fire.

A neighbor reportedly got the mother and child out of the house. The woman was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries; her toddler had only cuts and scrapes.

Police found Steele at his residence, also on Magnolia Lane, later that morning. The 34-year-old is charged with two counts of attempted capital murder and is being held on $1,000,000 bond.
