RICHARDSON (CBSDFW.COM) - Over the Memorial Day weekend, going green will cost just a little bit less money. Starting on Saturday, certain energy-efficient appliances will be able to be purchased without the sales tax. Supporters of the Energy Star sales tax holiday say that this is a win-win deal for the environment and our wallets.

The Energy Star purchases will save consumers hundreds of dollars upfront. But then as the products are used and energy costs are kept lower, there will be even more savings felt down the road. For example, Energy Star qualified washers use about 30 percent less energy and 50 percent less water than a regular washer – saving on monthly energy and water bills.

Some experts estimate that, if households used Energy Star products and solutions, they could save up to 30 percent on energy bills. That amounts to a savings of roughly $700 a year.

Here’s a list of appliances that can be purchased tax-free this weekend:

  • air conditioners priced at $6,000 or less
  • refrigerators priced at $2,000 or less
  • ceiling fans
  • incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs
  • clothes washers
  • dishwashers
  • dehumidifiers
  • programmable thermostats labled ‘Energy Star’

Anyone in Texas is eligible for the sales tax holiday at any store in the state that sells the Energy Star appliances. The sales tax holiday even applies online, provided that the seller does business in Texas.
