Rockwall Couple & Son Killed In Car Crash

View Comments

MOUNT PLEASANT (CBSDFW.COM) –  A couple and a one-year-old boy were killed and a three-year-old boy was injured after rear-ending a freightliner tractor-trailer that was pulled over along the side of eastbound Interstate 30 Saturday just west of Texarkana.

Rockwall residents Leah Compton Eason, 30, and 1-year-old Luke Eason were pronounced dead at the scene. James Eason, 30, died at Titus Regional Medical Center in Mount Pleasant.

A 3-year-old boy was taken to Children’s Medical Center and is in good condition, a spokesman said. Public safety officials have not released his name.

A spokesman said the tractor-trailer was stopped “for traffic reasons.” The Easons were driving a 2009 Hyundai. James Eason was a fifth grade teacher at BJ Smith Elementary in the Mesquite ISD. Leah Eason had been an assistant principal at Florence Black Elementary for one year.

The district posted information about the tragedy on its Facebook page, calling it “a very sad day for the MISD family,” and added that the “family has had a positive influence on many young lives.”

My son was in Mr. Eason’s class 2 years ago. In his own words, Mr. Eason “was an amazing teacher who made me who I am today. He gave me knowledge and confidence. I will miss him.” I am a substitute teacher and have enjoyed getting to know him even better the last couple of years. He was a wonderful teacher, friend, dad & person. He will be missed by all who knew him.

I’m sorry to hear about this tragedy. My prayers are with their family and the child who was injured.

I cried when I saw this story. I can’t imagine what this must be like for the little boy who survived. Praying for him, and the rest of the family who must now take care of everything that has been left behind by this young couple!

Regardless of how it happened it’s still a horrible accident. Putting thoughts in folks mind that it “might involve a cell phone” —Is a WAG! Wild Assumption–Guess!!
Fact of the matter is so many of us use cell phones while driving, or the kids distract us. There are all kinds of reasons . Plain and simple— a wonderful family has been lost. Don’t be so insensitive to those of us who cared about them.

Don’t let yourselves forget, we each have numbered days, for reason that we do not know
    God wanted it this way.

Mr. Eason was my nieces teacher this past school year and although I did not know him personally I knew him through her and her love for him. Mr. Eason impacted my nieces life in ways beyond our imagining and it is sad to think that an 11 yr old has to experience grief in this magnitude. To the families of Mr. Eason and his wife I send my sincere thoughts and prayers for your loss and to the poor child that has lost so much. May god be with you and yours :)

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Eason and Compton families. Leah was a good friend of mine going up, always kind and generous. Leah, Jim and Luke will be remembered dearly by all those who knew them.

  • EMT MOMMY

I saw this accident it was horrible! Traffic was at a complete stop for miles due to another accident a couple miles east of this one where a camper had been destroyed and workers were having to clean up that mess by hand. We were headed West to Dallas from Texarkana. And this accident happened in a place where it was very hard for rescue to get over there due to the stopped traffic in front of and behind and the place they were in had a ravne area for the median which was difficult to cross. I’m an EMT and ,y husband is a police officer but we had our 3 small children with us so we didn’t stop. People were already responding we felt we would be in the way attempting to get over there as well. We are praying for this family. My heart was breaking as we passed them knowing what the outcom probably was.

Don’t be so mean and insensitive. This could have happend to you so if someone was saying/ assuming this then what would you do? i cared about this family and i was in his class for a couple days i knew him! he does not text and drive! or talk on the phone he knows better not to! ANY anything of that matter> And… his wife would have takin care of the baby!
if you didnt know him i could under stand that but i knew him so thats probably not what happend just know that everyone can belive what they belive!

This man was not only my friend but my daughters teacher last year as well..Just 3 weeks ago our boys were running together & playing and now all we have are our memories….It’s so insulting to me that someone who didn’t know this family would just assume he was on his phone… You do an injustice to them and everyone who loved them. How about sending our your prayers to Jace who now has to carry on without his parents or brother insted of making nasty assumptions. They were a beautiful, loving family and they will be so missed by everyone who knew them…….

  • SmileSingLaugh

Sorry but Schrodinger could be right. Someone wasn’t paying attention. Yes, the entire thing is horrible, a tragedy. But, someone took their eyes off the road.

I’ve been in and around car accidents all of my career.
Unfortunately, this is not an uncommon occurrence. Drivers often don’t expect Semi-trailers to be just “sitting” there on the highway and sometimes misjudge these tractor-trailers as moving…. at first glance.
It’s a senseless accident for everyone involved.
However, to assume that someone wasn’t paying attention isn’t necessarily fair to this poor man and his family. It may very well be the case… but the truth is, none of you know jack squat. You weren’t there and you didn’t see it happen. So, assume nothing. Unless you have powers beyond mine, I’m afraid you’re just talking out your rear.

Yes, it is sad, and no one will probably ever know the reason for this accident and my sympathy to the families, but your are stating that going to fast is okay, that glancing in the back seat is ok, and does it matter if the semi was on the side of the road or simply in front of them moving. Either way they ran into it., and either way it is tragic, but acciidents like this do happen often because of cell phones or driving too fast. And No, I am not a perfect driver, but when I have my kids in the car I try to be extra careful. Several yeas ago a friend of mine and one of his children were killed on this same highway, and it was because he chose to drive after not having enough sleep.
