Tarrant County Sheriff Investigating Surveillance Camera Breach

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) – People expect law enforcement officers to watch suspects, following them and doing surveillance without anyone finding out.

Tarrant County Sheriff Dee Anderson was recently surprised to find out that someone may have been listening in on his deputies and other employees.

The county has a state-of-the-art surveillance system.  Cameras can be found all around the county’s main office building.  That building houses the sheriff’s office, district clerk and the county IT department.

Sheriff Anderson is now trying to figure out if the cameras are being used to spy on people inside the building, including his own deputies.  “Almost any conversation that was being had in a earshot of one of those cameras was being overheard if someone was listening.”

Anderson says a witness blew the whistle, claiming that one or more employees gained access to the cameras and listened in on conversations of other county employees.

He says it appears most of the eavesdropping was happening on the IT floor.  “If one of my deputies was down in IT visiting with somebody they certainly could have been overheard.”

But he can’t rule out that it possibly happened all over the building.  Anderson says even though the employees had access, federal law states you cannot tap into someone else’s conversation without them knowing about it.

G. K. Maenius is the administrator over IT for the county. “I understand what might have happened and all I can say is I’m waiting for the Sheriff’s Department to finish their investigation.”

The investigation comes on the heels of a recent investigation involving a former IT Manager who had downloaded porn on his county-owned computer.

The county says at this point no one has been disciplined.

Under our rights to freedom of speech any and all employees of Tarrant county
should be able to discuss what was on the evening news. I understand county employees were forbidden to speak of this matter Wednesday morning. Does the
county IT department have something to hid? It might be something as simple as
the security system was being checked. There is something rotten for management
to have taken this kind of action. Our tax dollars pay these folks salaries. All our
employees should be treated with respect. A well informed employee is an asset.
