TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) – A little extra cash made a huge dent in the number of drunks being taken off the roads recently.
A special grant from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) paid for state troopers to spend extra time patrolling for drunk drivers before, during and after the Fourth of July holiday.
Tom Vinger, with the Department of Public Safety, says more than 1,400 people were arrested, but a huge number of those were directly related to the extra funds.
“During the overtime hours we were able to actually arrest 575 drunk drivers that we probably wouldn’t have been able to arrest without this grant,” he explained.
The special enforcement program ran from June 27 through July 6. The next one is planned for the Labor Day holiday.
