North Texas Churches Target of Thieves

By Phyllis K. Smith, 1080 KRLD

DALLAS (1080 KRLD) – You’ve heard recent reports about a woman who died from the heat just days after her central air conditioning unit was stolen. But homeowners aren’t the only target for these crooks, churches are being hit hard as well.

Members of the Chisolm Baptist Church in Rockwall came to church on Sunday in flip-flops and shorts after 10 of the church’s air conditioners were stolen. Police say it’s a common crime among thieves, because the high-dollar value of the copper in the A/C units.

But Pastor Rocky Weatherford is hurt that his sanctuary would be a victim of this crime. He says he can’t imagine anybody stooping so low to steal from a church saying it’s not how he was raised.

Other churches around North Texas have been targeted as well, which costs money and discomfort for those faithful enough to show up and brave the heat.

In the meantime, Pastor Weatherford hopes to have the A/C units replaced by this Sunday’s service.

Insurance will cover most of the 24 thousand dollar loss, but Weatherford believes they’ll have to spend even more to secure and protect the new units from future thefts.

Sadly, this may be true for some pew warmers.

  2. Rosie says:

What ugly comments. Why do you bother; you should be ashamed and who are you to be judging anyone besides yourselves?

“When a man’s ways are pleasing to the Lord, he makes even his enemies live at peace with him” – Proverbs 16:7

Guess you can tell which churches are not truly following God 😉

    1. solo_poke says:

The ones which put their own comfort before the needs of the disadvantaged, which happen to be suffering from terrible droughts…I see the signs not sure they do.

    2. Class Warfare 2011 says:

Blade didn’t you go to jail for tax evasion? You should day-walk your ignorant ass out of here!

    3. Bob Smith says:

Pretty stupid scripture given the fact that Jesus was the most pleasing. “In him who I am pleased” and he killed him anyway. And Martin Luther, Lincoln, Ghandi, Rabin, hmmmm, something doesn’t seem to add up.

    4. Don says:

You one of the low lives that stole one of them?

  5. allness says:

This is called spreading the wealth and closing loop-holes that allow churches to spend money on A/C. Obama’s class warfare is working!

  6. Hank Warren says:

Illegals stealing everything now that lawn care work is over, yet another violation of our rights. Add it to the list of gov’t violations of our rights:
They violate the 1st Amendment by placing protesters in cages, banning books like “America Deceived II” and censoring the internet.
They violate the 2nd Amendment by confiscating guns.
They violate the 4th and 5th Amendment by molesting airline passengers.
They violate the entire Constitution by starting undeclared wars for foreign countries.
Impeach Obama, vote for Ron Paul.

If these were mosques, they would be called “hate crimes.”

    So …

  8. ImaConfusedaMerican says:

Where are the POLICE, aren’t they supposed to prevent crime, enforce morality, politically correct speech, and help make sure the Neo-Democommunists stay in power? Communists and Democrats are anti-Christian, the police need to investigate Tea-Party activists for this crime!!!

    1. solo_poke says:

You forgot to mention to bow down to our corporate masters.

On the other hand, I extend one finger to the Fortune 500, and their sheeple worshipers.

    2. Stormrider says:

The Rockwall police, sheriff deputies and state-police troopers are on Interstate 30 writing tickets. Rockwall is the safest place to commit a crime against property. The police are too busy writing tickets to bother with crime. The city and county want’s the revenue.

    Impeach Obama.

    1. "tithe too much" says:

Seriously? What in the world does Obama have to do with some fundamentalist church? I say make all churches pay taxes and we will be out of debt in 6 months.

  10. Carlos says:

Regrettable what happened but perhaps there’s something good that will come out of this.

How about we go back to meeting in homes and get away from this Sunday building equals church nonsense?

You have to give this one to Islam on “thiefs”.
We’ve all seen internet video on Islamic courts issuing justice to thieves. They tie off the convicted persons arms and legs, and they read sentence. Which is immediately dealt with, they hack off the right hand, and the left foot.
No, post sentence applications for review. Justice is handed out, and executed. Its also said that in Islamic countries theft is virtually gone. It still happens, but the convicted person know what lies in store if caught.

    1. solo_poke says:

Do I detect a little bit of Sharia law lust?

    2. alces says:

I understand from my Muslim friend that there are many left handed individuals with only a right leg. in most Islamic countries.

    3. alces says:

My Muslim friend says that they can’t stop people from stealing but they do tend to break them from the habit.

  12. Zul says:

I don’t really see the point in church, considering all you do is hear about made up fairly tales from a cult. But one thing remains, you don’t steal from someone regardless of the buildings purpose. Hunt down the criminals responsible and prosecute them.

    1. TheUncausedCause says:

I would agree it was a made up fairy tale – except for the eye witness accounts of Jesus coming to earth to let us know that it is all true. It actually takes more faith to be an atheist than it does to be a Christian. I’m not here to condemn, but before you dismiss it out of hand, why don’t you do a little research on WHY Christians believe what they believe – you might actually learn something on this side of eternity before you learn it on the other side of eternity when it’s too late….

  13. jj realist says:

Why shouldn’t people steal from the church?

    1. samg42 says:

You are in for a surprise jj.
      Have a nice trip!!!!!!

    2. Carlos says:

What kind of logic is that??

      I mean that’s like saying….

Why shouldn’t people steal from your family?
Families steal from people every day.

Does that really make sense to you or are you just being silly?

Churches are just gatherings of people who believe in God. If by “church” you mean generic church as in all churches (and not the specific one mentioned in the article) what you are saying is that all groups of people who believe in God steal.

Do you honestly believe that is the case? How so?

I don’t like lots of stuff churches do. A whole lot of stuff. But I can’t ever recall a church stealing from me. That seems a bit far fetched don’t you think?

  14. jj realist says:

Just the EVIL controlling the STUPID.

    1. pyramid says:

Believe me JJ when I say even you have a God or Gods. It might be what you consider “logic” or “reason” or it might be you plasma screen TV or it might be the trees in your front yard, but you have a god. The saddest are those who see their god every time they look in the mirror.

Stealing from a church….Enjoy the AC now you little Hoodies because ain’t no coolness down below when you die!

  16. Alpha says:

Pastor Rocky Weatherford said that he can’t imagine anybody stooping so low to steal from a church saying it’s not how he was raised.

What was Pastor Weatherford raised to steal and from whom?

  18. solo_poke says:

As Jesus told us to always put our own comfort before the needs of others, and to overlook the cause of poverty and to always blame the poor for the greed of the wealthy, since they make convenient and defenseless scapegoats for the crimes of others.

The faithfull in Texas ever consider the fact that drought may be a sign that they are following the wrong people?

Of course not, the self righteous are never wrong, even when they are wrong.
Enjoy your drought, I am going for a swim in the lake, and I getting there in the Jeep I converted to electric drive and power with my wind turbine.

  19. solo_poke says:

Screaming bloody murder over AC units at the church is a good distraction as the wealthy continue to fleece the sheeple any which way the can.

Wallstreet buzzards love sheeple its their favorite carion.

  20. jack says:

I think it is really sad that anybody justifies theft because they don’t happen to believe the same thing the victim does. That’s been done before, recently with Jews, remember? Its being done today in other places, consider the Christians in Egypt, or the Christians and Sufis in Iran, or the Christians and Naumeans in Iraq. What’s next for us, justifying theft on the basis of a person’s skin color, or native language? How about just saying its all right to take anything form anybody as long as they have it and you want it. Any old reason will do, you can think one up later.

  21. SavedbyGrace says:

It is so sad to hear that this happened to such a humble, loving church. What is even more sad is to see people who are so against something. It is one thing to not believe in Christianity but to be hateful is just evidence how much some of you need God. Whether you know it or not, Not one person is perfect on this earth. If a Christian says they are they are probably not a true Christian. We have all fallen short of the glory of God but is throught the blood of Jesus, repenting from our sins, and trusting in the Lord that we may have eternal life. So I will be praying for your souls that are filled with such hate because I was once there too!

  22. William says:

People used to go to church for centuries in extreme heat, fully dressed up, in reverence, instead of showing up what used to be considered underwear–i.e. shorts and flip flops. Modern Baptists have no reverence, everything is about their own comfort, forget what God thinks.

Americans used to live just find without air conditioning! I thought Texans were tough! Not the new Texans. Davie Crocket never had air conditioning you contemporary, sport-wear pansies.

The more you read different news sites the more it seems getting closer to buying a few lead talkers. I think a couple boxes of hollow points with the talkers would be a good first investment.
