Fan Who Died From Fall At Ballpark To Get Statue

ARLINGTON (AP)  The Texas Rangers fan killed last month when he fell from the stands at Rangers Ballpark while reaching for a ball will be honored with a bronze statue at the stadium.

The Rangers announced Monday that the statue will depict Brownwood firefighter Shannon Stone and his 6-year-old son Cooper at a Rangers game. The statue likely will be in place for next season outside the park’s home plate gate.

Rangers CEO and President Nolan Ryan said it’s a fitting tribute to honor Stone, who fell as he reached for a foul ball tossed his way by Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton.

Stone’s wife, Jenny, said her family was “touched and grateful” and hoped the sculpture would be a reminder of “the importance of a family’s love – love of each other, love of spending time together, and love of the game.”

Wouldn’t a college fund be more appropriate? A statue, where he died? Really? Give the money fora statue to the kid without a father to support him.

I agree. A statue to every fan who has an accident at the ballpark? That statue will cost at least 10 or 20 thousand or more then a few more thousand to ship it and install it. I am sure Shannon Stone would have wanted to be honored for something more worthy then reaching for a baseball and falling over a rail. Do you think this is PR control for being the country’s premire ballpark with the highest number of fans falling over their railings?

I’ll just address both of the previous comments I can see (Jojo and NiteNurse).

Jojo, there is a fund set up for the boy. Nolan announced it in the press conference the day or so after he fell.

NiteNurse, you mention “highest number of fans falling over their railings” as if it is a common occurance. It has happened 3 times since the stadium opened.

He didn’t die AT the ballpark, so in my opinion, the statue doesn’t make much sense.

File under, “Are You F-CKING Kidding Me?” Is this statue sponsored by The Darwin Awards?

  5. Satan says:

They should hang the statue with suspension wire between the railing and the ground. It would be artistic and accurate, portraying the last half second before he made impact. LOL. This is total BS. I feel bad for the kid, but a STATUE? Jesus Christ…

  6. Fla Fla Floey says:

How much you want to bet this was part of some out of court settlement? Scholarship? Money? Nah – STATUE!!!!

  7. Jackie says:

It pays to be of a certain people. Fall from stand get statue, know your baby is
dead and have a long court case, get famous. Commit all the crimes you want,
tack on a catchy headliner name go down in history admired. No wonder everyone
wants to be of a certain people.
