Online Companies Let You Design Your Own Shoes

NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) – Online shoe stores allow customers to design their own perfect pair.

Lynne Diamante was tired of looking through racks of shoes and coming up empty. So she was thrilled when she learned that some websites allow customers to design their own shoes.

“This was custom designed for a special occasion,” Diamante said, pointing to a stunning pair of silver stilettos. “It’s probably the most addictive form of internet shopping you can do because you can literally make up any shoe that you desire.”

The websites allow you to customize the color, toe, heel height and just about any other detail you can imagine.

Dorian Howard started a web-based business called Milk and Honey because she was tired looking for the right shoe.

“You would either find it in the right shade, but the wrong heel height or it’s too dark and you wanted pointed-toe not round-toe,” said Howard. “There were just little things on the shoe we wanted to change and that’s how we came up with the idea.”

Customers start with a basic style, and then choose a heel and color. But the custom shoes don’t some cheap. Prices start at $200 and can reach as high as $1,000. It can take up to six weeks for the shoes to be delivered.

“It makes it harder to buy shoes in the store now,” said customer Danielle Diamond, who doesn’t mind waiting a few weeks longer to get exactly what she wants.

While several websites allow women to put their best foot forward, men’s footwear is gaining ground too. Reebok and Nike already have “design your own” sites, and other companies are about launch design sites for men’s dress shoes.

I’m needing a website like this for my husband. One of his feet are twisted from his stroke, and standard shoe designs create sores and pain most of the time. The only pair that seem to work for him are some open toed sandals with velcro straps…but you can’t wear them everywhere, and wintertime is tough.

    The hunt continues!!
