COMMERCE (CBSDFW.COM) – Investigators in the Hunt County city of Commerce are trying to determine what caused a mobile home fire that killed a 4-year-old girl. The incident happened at about 6:11 p.m. on Monday night.
When fire crews arrived at the blaze at the USA Mobile Home Park on Washington Street, the mobile home unit was about 50 percent engulfed, according to city spokesman Marty Cunningham.
Witnesses knew that 4-year-old Annette Reyes was in a back bedroom, and some tried to save her as the little girl’s mother and 8-year-old brother yelled for help. But flames were too intense. “It was bad. We tried to get a little girl out of there, but we couldn’t,” recalled neighbor Douglas Hamilton. “The fire was so hot. It was melting everything down, but we couldn’t get to her.”
According to neighbors, Reyes had just started in for the first time in pre-kindergarten.
Firefighters entered the burning home and removed Reyes from the back bedroom. She was transported to Presbyterian Hospital of Greenville, where she was later pronounced dead.
There is no word yet on what started the fire.
