AUSTIN (CBSDFW.COM) - A 19-year-old college student from Plano has died after falling from an apartment balcony in Austin.

Richard John Holland, a sophomore at the University of Texas, died late Monday night after leaning against a fifth floor balcony railing.

Austin police spokesman Anthony Hipolito says Holland fell approximately 50 feet. “As of right now it’s being investigated as an accidental fall. It appears that he basically just leaned too far over the rail and fell,”Hipolito told Austin CBS affiliate KEYE-TV.

Holland was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead about two hours later.

Police say there were other people in the apartment with Holland who witnessed him fall off the balcony.

Police say nothing appeared wrong with the railing Holland was leaning on when he fell off the balcony.

Holland would have turned 20 years old on Labor Day.

This seems to happen more than the norm at these apartments. Why don’t they make the railings higher? How many other young kids have to die before it is fixed?

Thank you Peggy, I agree. We all make thousands and thousands of silly mistakes. It is unfair that this silly mistake cost such a wonderful kid his life. Richard was truly one of a kind. His spirit lit up a room of people who were down. I am speaking first hand. It is impossible to begin to describe how wonderful this goofy kid was. The world needs more Richard Holland’s in it.
