Student Takes Loaded Gun To Duncanville School

DUNCANVILLE (CBSDFW.COM) – Parents are on edge in Duncanville after a middle school student was caught with a loaded handgun on Wednesday.

School officials found the gun in a student’s backpack at Brandenburg Intermediate.

Teachers and administrators began looking for the weapon after a parent contacted the school, saying the student had been showing off the gun on a school bus.

As word of the incident spread, one parent, with a fifth grade child at Brandenburg, said, “What scares me is that, what if that child hadn’t told the parent and what if the parent hadn’t taken action? What then?”

The student was taken into custody at the school.

On Thursday Duncanville ISD sent a letter home to the parents of the 5th and 6th graders at Brandenburg Intermediate.

“We wanted to communicate promptly to our parents, within that school community, to make them aware of the incident,” Duncanville ISD Chief Communications Officer Tammy Kuykendall.

So far no punishment has been decided for the student, but under district policy the child could be expelled for up to one year.

what needs to happen is felony charges against the parent or parents who let the child have access to a loaded gun to begin with.

    1. Bob says:

I agree with Darrell. The parents should be held responsible for making the firearm accessible to the child.

No where does it say the student got the gun from their parent(s). How do we know the student didn’t get it from a friend or someone else. Don’t be so quick to judge people. But then again, most people are so much more perfect that they can throw out blanket judgements.

you are correct jeff perhaps i pre-condemed the parents in error. but a parent of someone reported it and if the gun did not come from the childs home then if the owner is traceble then accountability should result.

      1. Jeff D Johnson says:

darrell, the parent of another child who saw the gun and told them reported it to the school. I commend the student for telling theor parent and the parent for alerting the school.

Good! I think all Americans should be armed at ALL times! Period.

Right, until a kid gains access to your gun and hurts or kills someone accidently then it’s not so good an idea. People who have guns usually are pretty lax about leaving them out for all to see or think they are smarter then the average kid. I know you gun fanatics are paranoid and feel you need to protect yourself but guns come with a HUGE responsibility. Having one means you have to be viligent at all times for the safety of innocent others who might come across it.

I agree with the right of all adults to carry a gun but this is an underage student illegally carrying a concealed weapon. Sounds like a felony to me; it should be out of the hands of the school and in the hands of the police to investigate how and where he git this gun.

Just to remind all you gun lovers that no matter where you hide your guns a kid will figure out how to gain access to it. My dad would hide his gun and warn me never to touch it but I always found it and did exactly what he told me not to. Fortunately I never got hurt but children are curious and smart so my advice is to either never have a gun in a house with kids or carry it with you at all times. Even a gun safe isn’t a 100 percent kid proof.
