DUNCANVILLE (CBSDFW.COM) – Parents are on edge in Duncanville after a middle school student was caught with a loaded handgun on Wednesday.

School officials found the gun in a student’s backpack at Brandenburg Intermediate.

Teachers and administrators began looking for the weapon after a parent contacted the school, saying the student had been showing off the gun on a school bus.

As word of the incident spread, one parent, with a fifth grade child at Brandenburg, said, “What scares me is that, what if that child hadn’t told the parent and what if the parent hadn’t taken action? What then?”

The student was taken into custody at the school.

On Thursday Duncanville ISD sent a letter home to the parents of the 5th and 6th graders at Brandenburg Intermediate.

“We wanted to communicate promptly to our parents, within that school community, to make them aware of the incident,” Duncanville ISD Chief Communications Officer Tammy Kuykendall.

So far no punishment has been decided for the student, but under district policy the child could be expelled for up to one year.
