4.6 Earthquake Hits South Texas

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — A rare and record-breaking South Texas earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.6 struck near rural Karnes County on Thursday morning, rattling homes and causing faint tremors in downtown San Antonio.

No injuries or major damage was reported, and the light quake wasn’t even noticed by some residents living close to the epicenter, near Karnes City. Yet small vibrations felt in San Antonio did cause occupants to briefly evacuate a downtown federal building as a precaution.

The quake struck at 7:24 a.m. The U.S. Geological Survey said it was the largest earthquake on record for the area, surpassing a magnitude-4.3 shock recorded in 1993.

Thursday’s earthquake occurred in a zone that has shaken in the past. From 1990 to 2006, at least a dozen small quakes rattled this region.

“It’s an area where we’ve seen events before,” said U.S. Geological Survey seismologist Susan Hough in Pasadena, Calif. “So it’s not a big surprise.”

Glynda Martinez, an associate municipal judge in Karnes City, said she thought a strong gust of wind or a tractor-trailer driving by was rattling dishes in her kitchen.

“When I saw my grandson this morning the first thing he told me was, `Grandma, our trailer house was shaking,”‘ said Jaunita Munos, school secretary for the Pawnee school district.

Small earthquakes in Texas are not exceptionally rare, but are seldom felt in this area. The last one recorded around Karnes County was in January 2010 and had a magnitude of 2.6, which is too small for many people to feel.

A September earthquake in West Texas had a 4.4 magnitude and was centered just north of Abilene.

The largest Texas quake occurred in 1931 when a magnitude-5.8 temblor struck near Big Bend. Adobe buildings were severely damaged and brick chimneys toppled, but there were no deaths.

umm big elephant in the room…this occurred in the heart of the Eagleford Shale where all recent huge growth there is in mining for the wetter gases and probably they also are using that area to reinject that waste too.

here in the barnett shale they are only giving us the little ones so far. i expect one around 7.4 in a few years though as they finish breaking it all into little pieces and what mother nature took millions of years to make finally decides to start from scratch again becomes a molten sea. it dont really matter when or how though. none of us are going to get out of this alive anyway. lol

This is true. Long before the “big one” will occur because all of this fracking, the world economy will have imploded, mass rioting will have wiped out most of us, and the rest of us will be spit-roasting our pets just to stay alive.

Everybody take heed…..tomorrow is the day that nut Harold Camping, once again, predicted that the world would end.

    Be warned and beware.

There is substantial gold from Eagle Pass to Bruni and Freer. The wells of Luling have re-filled. Many of the gas fields in McAllen and Hidalgo County have have re-filled.

Every Armageddon scenario painted put on bloody canvas by the eco-mendacious nut-cases always winds up being another AlGore lie designed to impede capitalist and free enterprise economic activity.

Back before the unanium extraction we were assured that everyone would die in Luling, Nixon, Karnes City and Kenecy, Runge, Pawnee, and Three Rivers. Also the building of the lake outside of Three Rivers would cause gtreat, devastating earthquakes, killing everyone from George West to Corpus Christi.

Sure, there’s a history of even stronger quakes that pre-dates drilling and mining, SO of course it’s oil drilling and mining that caused it.

    Ever heard of Occam’s Razor?

Geologically this is not rare, not related to seismic data gathering, drilling, fracking, extraction, disposal, drought or any of the human activities mentioned. This area is on a fault zone between the Gulf Plate and the Texas Inland Plate, and has been having slippage earthquakes for millions of years. Just because humans live around there lately isn’t going to make the earthquakes stop. The quake was relatively shallow, at 5 miles, as earthquakes go, and the past 30 earthquakes over the past 50 years in the area have been relatively shallow, especially compared to a 29 mile deep earthquake nearby about 30 years ago (refer to USGS site for recorded history of earthquakes in this area over the past century) but was still several miles deeper than any well, any fracking, and waste water disposal in the area. Since 1984, there have been more than 15 quakes in the vicinity of the conjunction of Live Oak, Atascosa, Bee and Karnes Counties, Texas, and since 50 million years ago, who knows how many, certainly not the uneducated humans who think that humans are the cause of, let alone capable of moving tectonic plates. Get a meaningful, productive, contributing life!
