FORT WORTH (AP) - A North Texas boy whose police officer father was killed in the line of duty has changed his name to honor his dad.

A judge in Fort Worth on Thursday approved 10-year-old Justin Nava changing his name to Henry Nava III.

Fort Worth police Officer Henry “Hank” Nava was fatally shot in 2005. A parole violator convicted of the killing was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

The officer’s widow, Teresa Nava-Salazar, says the couple’s son approached her about a year ago asking to be allowed to have his father’s name.

The boy says some of his friends started calling him Henry even before the name change was official.

  • RussP

A 10 year old who already understands the concepts of pride and honor; I’m sure his dad would be really proud and honored.

  • THANK OUR POLICE!

Great story! It’s nice to read things like this instead of all the negative the media bombards us with! As Russ stated..10years old and this young child realizes his father died a hero protecting people he didn’t even know! Thank you for running this story CBS !! and thank you to all the DFW police officers who protect us 24/7..we as the public are very quick to condemn when an officer gets in trouble but the only reason me,my wife, kids and family can sleep in peace at night is because these officers are away from their own families protecting ours! Thank you..God Bless Officer Nava and his family
