DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – First the Dallas Mavericks topped their 11th straight 50-win season with an NBA championship, then the NBA lockout gave the league it’s first work stoppage since the 1998-99 season. But the Mavs are back on the hardwood and next week they celebrate their victory with President Barack Obama.
President Obama will honor the team and their 2011 NBA Championship victory at the White House on January 9.
Just one day ago Mavs owner Mark Cuban publicly criticized the NBA for not scheduling a game for the team in Washington. Cuban claimed he “took the lead”, arranged the trip and included the league in his plans.
The NBA claims it helped coordinate the Mavs visit upon learning the president would be available.
Regardless, the champs are headed to the nation’s capitol.
As part of the event President Obama will also recognize an effort by the Mavericks’ off the court — supporting members of the U.S. military and their families.
