HALTOM CITY (CBSDFW.COM) – Police in Haltom City are looking for the person or persons who have been on a rampage with a BB gun.
Over the last three weeks, police have answered 26 reports of criminal mischief. Each case, at different locations across the city, involved the shooting out of windows on cars and at businesses.
Besides the suspected BB or pellet gun, police believe a slingshot, with marbles and small pieces of metal, was used in some cases. Authorities have found small nuts and bolts, almost like the vandal or vandals are picking up anything they can use to do the damage.
“When it started out with a BB gun or pellet gun we were thinking, ‘well, somebody got a new gift for Christmas’, but since they’ve gone to the slingshot I don’t know,” Haltom City police Cpl. Joe Hackfeld said with concern.
Duston Sutton saw a spiderweb of cracks across the back window of his Chevrolet truck a few days after the New Year.
“I backed out of the driveway, my headlights hit it and it sparkled,” he said. “I thought, ‘no, something’s wrong.’ I got out and checked it and seen it shot out.”
Authorities say every broken car window is worth at least $200 each. Some businesses have incurred damages of as much as $2,000.
In all, the crimes have resulted in more than $20,000 in damages.
There have been several similar crimes in Fort Worth.
Haltom City police are asking that anyone with information crimes call Crime Stoppers at (817) 469-TIPS (8477).
