FORT HOOD (AP) – About 500 people gathered at a chapel to remember the life of a brigadier general who died earlier this month in Afghanistan.

Brig. Gen. Terence Hildner apparently died of natural causes Feb. 3.The military said he was the highest ranking U.S. soldier to die in Afghanistan.

Speakers at his memorial service Saturday at Spirit of Fort Hood Chapel called him a tremendous and compassionate leader and a gentleman. The service included a bagpipe rendition of “Amazing Grace,” the firing of volleys and a lone bugler playing “Taps.” The general will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors Feb. 29.

Hildner had commanded the 13th Expeditionary Sustainment Command at Fort Hood since August 2010. He left for Afghanistan in December to support the NATO mission there.
