SURPRISE, Ariz. (CBSDFW.COM) – Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton has done some clarifying lately.
“I don’t feel like I owe the Rangers,” he said.
Those eight words stood out during Hamilton’s 37 minute press conference on Friday, which was sprinkled with everything from Emerile Lagasse-style “BAM!” outbursts to Bible scripture to lines from the movie “The Waterboy.”
He’s been asked about that statement repeatedly in the 48-plus-hours since then.
In fairness, that comment was an answer to a question. He didn’t come right out and say that.
I approached him after Sunday’s workout to talk him about it and a few other things. Before we started the interview, he asked me if this would be the last time I would ask him about that Friday press conference, telling me he wanted to “talk baseball.”
So after doing just that (he feels great, by the way) I asked Hamilton exactly what he meant that has everyone in a tizzy.
“The answer is I owe them 100 percent of everything I got as far as on the field, the way I play, the way I interact with my teammates, with the fans,” he said. “What I owe is what I’ve been given so that’s it.”
He added that he hasn’t heard anything about his contract. However, when I spoke with general manager Jon Daniels on Saturday, he didn’t rule out the prospect of revisiting those contract talks during the season because of the “extenuating circumstances” surrounding the four-time All Star.
Daniels told me he prefers not doing contracts during the season.
