texasam A&M Woman Qualifies For Runoff To Be Yell Leader

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) – Samantha Ketcham still has a shot at becoming Texas A&M’s first female Yell Leader after the junior became the only woman in school history to receive enough votes to qualify for a runoff.

Ketcham was one of two women hoping to be elected to the five member group, which A&M has instead of cheerleaders, that has always been comprised of men only at this formerly all-male military institution.

Ketcham says she’s “shocked and excited” to have made the runoff. Voting will be done Thursday and Friday.

Three seniors and two juniors are selected for the group and a person must receive at least 50 percent of the vote to be elected. Nelson Ingram was elected with 58.74 percent of the vote, but no other senior candidate — such as Ketcham — reached the 50 percent mark.

Ketcham’s 3,271 votes out of 15,385 cast were the fewest of the four candidates who qualified for the runoff. Minna Nashef, the other woman running, will not be included in the runoff after garnering 9.24 percent of the vote.

Sophomores Hunter Cook and Ryan Crawford were elected as the junior Yell Leaders.
