LEWISVILLE (CBSDFW.COM) – After being pulled over on suspicion of drunken driving, the suspect took a Highway Patrol Trooper’s baton and fled the scene early Saturday morning, a DPS spokesman said.
Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Lonny Haschel said the suspect, Carrollton resident Alexander D. Williams, 24, was stopped on South Mill St. at Business 121 at 2:34 a.m. for driving erratically.
During the arrest, Haschel said Williams broke away from the arresting officer “and a struggle ensued.” Williams took the trooper’s baton and, fearing for his life, the officer fired one round at the suspect, Haschel said, adding that the bullet missed Williams.
The suspect fled the scene, but was arrested “a short distance away.” Williams has been charged with driving while intoxicated, evading law enforcement and aggravated assault on a police officer.
Williams and the trooper both sustained minor injuries during the struggle, Haschel said.
