LUBBOCK (AP) - Wildlife officials have suspended their policy of killing wild burros in West Texas as animal advocates devise a nonlethal plan to remove the animals.

Texas Parks and Wildlife officials said Tuesday the agency will contribute up to $10,000 toward an aerial survey the Humane Society of the United States will conduct this spring. The society hopes the survey will help it find the best way to remove the burros.

Carter Smith, the state agency’s executive director, says funding for a nonlethal method must continue for several years. He spoke to The Associated Press ahead of releasing the news publicly later Tuesday.

The agency considers the 300 wild donkeys that live in Big Bend Ranch State Park destructive invaders. Park rangers have shot 130 of them since 2007.
