NEW YORK (CBS SPORTS) – Bill Parcells last coached an NFL game in 2006 with the Dallas Cowboys. From 2008-10 he served as the Dolphins executive vice president, and last season he was an analyst for ESPN. Earlier this week, Saints head coach Sean Payton, who’s about to serve a one-year suspension for his involvement in the Saints’ bounty scandal, approached Parcells about filling New Orleans’ coaching vacancy for 2012.

Needless to say, the move didn’t go over well with everyone. On Wednesday, Parcells admitted that he didn’t know if he’d return to coaching, even on an interim basis. But that may be because there hasn’t yet been a formal job offer. “I don’t know because I don’t know what this consists of,” Parcells told USA Today’s Jarrett Bell, a day after meeting with Payton and Saints general manager Mickey Loomis.

There’s still a chance Payton appeals NFL commissioner Roger Goodell’s decision, and he’ll have until Monday to do so. “I don’t know what the end result will be and whether or what in fact (the Saints) want to do,” Parcells said. “None of this has been discussed or decided. We’re a long way off.”
