600 J.C. Penney Workers Laid Off, 13 Percent Of Plano Staff

NEW YORK (CBSDFW.COM/AP) – Plano-based J.C. Penney Co. says it has laid off 600 associates, or 13 percent of the staff at its headquarters today. The move comes as the department store chain looks to streamline its operations amid a major reinvention of the business.

The department store chain also will eliminate 300 additional associates at the Customer Call Center when it closes the center July 1.

The moves come as its new CEO, former Apple Inc. executive Ron Johnson, is transforming every aspect of its business, from pricing to the brands it carries.

J.C. Penney Co. had set out to reinvent the brand by changing to ” fair and square pricing” in stores and launching a new company logo and store look.

The company had hinted that cuts would come when it told investors in January that it planned to reduce layers of management at its headquarters. Before the layoffs, the company had 4,400 employees at its headquarters.

The new CEO, with no CEO experience, comes in with wild and crazy ideas to change a corporate culture. Apparently it hasn’t worked and all indicators show it will not work. This is a seriously flawed approach from a management group headed by an ex Apple exec who, quite frankly, let the world of business know that you can’t bring in someone with no knowledge of your particular industry and hope to bring great results. In his case, he brought change but it didn’t and will not work. Bye bye JCP, it is time to stick a fork in you’re a$$…you’re done.

This new CEO is doomed. JCP was desperate in hiring him. Anyone who was a lieutenant of Steve Jobs will be highly recruited because of Apple. Apple had a great product line because of Steve’s vision and drive. If this guy had worked in Wal-mart, no one would even look at him.

  4. Apple Critter says:

Ron Johnson, JCPenney’s Savior and CEO chose Passover to sacrifice the lambs and save His company.

RonJohn, the name given Him by JCP associates who faithfully believed the slick gospel preacher’s messianic claims that the He could make JCPenney America’s favorite store, played almost all the parts in His passion.

In an internal message to JCPenney associates grieving over the loss of their friends, family, and co-workers, RonJohn said:

“Making this type of decision … is most difficult in leadership. … As we re-imagine every aspect of our business, there are … guiding principles that illuminate our path. … Most importantly, the principle to be Fair and Square in everything we do.”

Ron Johnson must be thinking “What is truth” every time he says “Fair and Square”, and in 2015, RonJohn will be seen as the Savior of JCPenney.
