I’m Cheering For My Favorite NBA Team To Lose!

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – This might not make sense to most people, but as a Mavericks fan, I would like to see the team lose every remaining game and miss the playoffs.  Why?  For a ping pong ball.

For this to make any sense, first you have to come to terms with the fact that the Mavericks as currently constructed aren’t going to win a title.  Don’t worry, it took me 60 games to get here, so if you’re holding onto the dream of a repeat, you’re not alone, you’re just confused.

In the NBA, the worst place you can be is a team that barely scrapes into the playoffs year after year.  Your reward for getting into the postseason is a swift kick in the hindquarters from a team better than you, then you have a draft pick in the late teens to early twenties, where the chances of getting an impact player are slim.

So where is the best place you can be?  How about having a centerpiece that you know is capable of being the best player on a championship team (Dirk), a very real chance at landing one of the best point guards in the league in the offseason (Deron Williams), and the ol’ lottery ping pong ball’s chance at adding an impact player in the draft?

The front office made a decision before this season that what really matters is how the next Dirk-led Maverick team would look.  No long-term deals for Tyson Chandler, Caron Butler, the neck-tatoo’ed Stevenson or the smokin’ hot lady dating JJ Barea.  Those moves were about the long term future, not a title run this season.  It’s time to get on board with what gives our Mavs the best chance to win on down the line, and in this case, it’s by losing.
