DALLAS (CBS SPORTS) – Larry Brown is getting yet another job, this time with SMU.

ESPN’s Jason King broke the news that Brown, the 71-year-old who last coached in college back in 1988, has accepted the job with the Mustangs — and Illinois State coach Tim Jankovich may come with him as the coach-in-waiting.

Both Kansas coach Bill Self and Kentucky coach John Calipari were both advocating SMU athletic director Steve Orsini go with Brown — despite the fact that he hasn’t been in the college game in more than two decades. Brown, who won a national title with Kansas in 1988, last coached with the Charlotte Bobcats in 2010.

Calipari, along with William “Worldwide Wes” Wesley, is also trying to help Brown assemble his staff to include former Illinois assistant Jerrance Howard and ex-Kentucky assistant Rod Strickland — who was demoted in 2010 after being arrested for a DUI.

SMU has wanted to hire a big name — and Orsini will accomplish that feat with the hiring of Brown. However, this is a guy who never stayed in one place during his lengthy coaching career – and now he’s 71 years old. (What’s Longer Than A Larry Brown Coaching Gig?) The key here is whether Jankovich, who has done a solid job at Illinois State, will wind up going with Brown.
