Plano Taking A ‘Smart’ Approach To City Issues
PLANO (CBSDFW.COM) – Smartphone technology is helping clean up neighborhoods in one local city.
“Fix it Plano” has become one the most government friendly tools in the new age of apps.
Users of iPhones, Blackberries and Androids can download an app for free that allows citizens to easily report problems at any hour of the day.
Lynn Ellis noticed a severe water leak early Monday morning coming from a fountain in her Plano neighborhood. “It was 7 o’clock so there was no way I was going to be able to call the City of Plano about it that early,” says Ellis. “It’s easy to use, good interface I didn’t have a problem with it.”
City spokesperson Dana Conklin says the program started last summer and has gained popularity. “It allows us to know more about what’s going on in the community,” says Conklin.
More than 1500 residents have used it so far to report everything from potholes to high weeds. It’s not only convenient for citizens, it also allows them to track repairs. “We’re finding new people who are communicating with us because of the mobile application,” says Conklin.
The city hopes the Fix It app’s mapping system which shows people where problems have already been reported will cut down on calls and let citizens know for certain their complaints are being heard.
