dfw Dallas Cowboys Mock Draft 5.0Best Young Athlete In DFW?

Okay, we’ve done mock drafts this week where the Cowboys select a 1st round safety in Alabama’s Mark Barron. Another one had Dallas opting for a 1st round defensive lineman in LSU’s Michael Brockers. We played out a mock draft taking a 1st round offensive guard in Stanford’s David DeCastro. So, how about a scenario that no one’s really talking about? How about a 1st round cornerback?

South Carolina’s Stephon Gilmore would likely be the Cowboys preferred choice, but he’s probably a Top 10 pick now, so let’s go with this:

1st Round – 14 – DRE KIRKPATRICK – CB – Alabama

Great size for a corner (6-1 1/2, 186), not great speed at 4.52 but not bad either… has the reach and the length to contend with big receivers… off the field stuff make him a less likely fit for the Cowboys, but for the purpose of this exercise, let’s say the Cowboys have checked him out and deemed him worthy character-wise.

And that pick sets up this 2nd round shocker:

2nd Round – TRADE UP – Dallas sends 2nd round pick (#45) and CB Mike Jenkins to Jacksonville for 2nd round pick (#38)

Mike Jenkins, going into his contract year with Drew Rosenhaus as his agent, is not going to be happy if the Cowboys draft a cornerback in the 1st round. So, Mike Jenkins, say hello to your new teammates in Jacksonville.

2nd Round – #38 – KENDALL REYES – DE – UConn

The trade allowed the Cowboys to get in the market to take a big 6-4, 300-pound defensive end, whose head coach happens to be former Cowboys assistant Paul Pasqualoni… Reyes has unreal athleticism for a 300 pound man (34 inch vertical)… he can even do a back flip, which is exactly what Rob Ryan will be doing if he can draft him… well, maybe not!

3rd Round- 81 – RYAN BROYLES – WR – Oklahoma

The last three of these mock drafts have left me in a personal funk. I’ve figured out why. Those mocks didn’t include my man, Ryan Broyles, the man with more receptions than anyone in the history of D1 College Football. Yes, Ryan Broyles is back where he belongs and everything is right in the Cowboys Mock Draft world again!

4th Round – 113 – DEQUAN MENZIE – CB/FS – Alabama

Ran himself into the 4th round and to another position in the NFL… safety… after his 4.67 forty at the combine… but he’s from Alabama, so draft him!

4th Round – 135 – PHILIP BLAKE – C – Baylor

Gotta take an offensive lineman… gotta take a Baylor Bear… who cares that this one will be 27 years old in November… he’s big, he’s smart (college grad), and he’ll compete immediately with Phil Costa for the starting center position.

5th Round – 152 – RHETT ELLISON – TE – USC

Cowboys are in desperate need of a backup tight end… love this one’s pass catching ability and intangibles… son of an NFL player… good size (6-5, 251)… they call him “The Machine” for his repetitious work ethic… they even named a leadership award at USC after him… take him!

6th Round – 186 – JACQUIES SMITH – OLB – Missouri

South Oak Cliff Golden Bear… former Mizzou QB Chase Daniel told me last week Smith’s a lot like former Tiger Aldon Smith, the #7 overall pick last year who had 14 sacks his rookie season in San Francisco… a 6th round steal?

7th Round – 222 – JERRY FRANKLIN – ILB – Arkansas

We’re told the Cowboys have now been mandated to take an Arkansas Razorback in every draft… and this four-year starter has the right alma mater and the right first name to become a Dallas Cowboy.
