AUSTIN (AP) - A convicted polygamist leader serving life in prison for sexual assault of two girls has told another Texas court to release him.
The San Angelo Standard-Times reports Warren Jeffs wrote to the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. The newspaper reported Thursday that the message cites divine will and instructs the justices to release Jeffs, under threat of “whirlwind judgments.”
Jeffs is the head of Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was convicted last year of sexually assaulting two of his underage brides at the group’s West Texas compound.
The 3rd Court of Criminal Appeals last month rejected a similar appeal from Jeffs, who’s representing himself.
A clerk says the state’s highest criminal court has 15 days to reply but is not obligated to do so.
