ARLINGTON (AP) – Oakland Athletics manager Bob Melvin has been ejected after arguing a call on a suicide squeeze that gave the Texas Rangers the lead.
A’s starter Brandon McCarthy thought he caught a bunt from Elvis Andrus in the air and threw to third base for what he figured would be a double play. Instead, home plate umpire Laz Diaz ruled McCarthy trapped the ball, and Craig Gentry was safe at home, giving the Rangers a 4-3 lead in the sixth inning Thursday.
Melvin immediately ran from the dugout and gestured repeatedly at Diaz, who finally ejected the manager.
Replays were inconclusive.
Grant Balfour replaced McCarthy and kept the Rangers from expanding the lead. Oakland it on Josh Reddick’s home run in the seventh.
