NORTH TEXAS (CBS 11 NEWS) – If you’re trying to lose weight or simply improve your overall health, studies show tracking your activity may help you reach your goals.
A recent report published in the Annals of Family Medicine shows that people who use a pedometer nearly double the number of leisure steps they take on a daily basis, and now, Nike is taking the pedometer high tech.
“It really just keeps you accountable in working out,” said Dallas resident Elliott Moore, who uses the Nike Fuel Band to monitor his every move. “It lets you know if you do better one day as opposed to the other day and totals up your points.”
Moore and his wife Sonya keep a running tally of their workouts and daily activity.
Even though they aren’t seeing immediate physical changes from their morning jogs, the new fitness tracker made by Nike is helping them see instant results.
The Nike fuel band lets you set personal fitness goals and track your progress by adding up your daily steps, the number of calories burned and calculating your ‘fuel points’.
“It’s really just a currency that Nike creates,” Moore explained, “it’s usually about 2 1/2 calories per point.”
“The nice thing about the Nike Fuel Band is it offers immediate tracking and immediate feedback,” said Dr. Jane Sadler, with Baylor Hospital in Garland.
Devices like the Fuel Band encourage users to “work harder or get up and move more often,” Sadler said. “What it does is gives a person positive feedback about their activity and by giving them positive feedback they’re more likely to be more physically active.”
The lightweight, digital band can be worn to work, the gym or even around the house and syncs with a smartphone so users can monitor activity day-to-day.
“I’m usually a go-go person,” Sonya Moore said, “so I like to see how much I’m doing on a daily basis.”
The Moore’s would like to see the band eventually monitor one’s heart rate as well.
The biggest downfall of the device, according to doctors and users, is it doesn’t accurately measure the calories burned from stationary activities such as yoga.
