GRAPEVINE (CBSDFW.COM) – A teacher in the Grapevine-Colleyville Independent School District has been arrested for having an improper relationship with a minor. Police in Grapevine arrested John McDaniel of Keller on Thursday.
The 32-year-old teacher and band director at Colleyville Middle School is charged with online solicitation of a minor and improper relationship between educator and student.
The arrest came after police received allegations on Wednesday that McDaniel had solicited a 15-year-old girl. “She was a student of his, I believe last year, last school year,” Grapevine police spokesman Sgt. Robert Eberling explained.
As it stands, investigators have not found any evidence of physical contact between the teacher and the teen. There had allegedly been ongoing exchanges of emails and sexually oriented text messages. “The information that we’re getting is that it was just, more or less, just sexting,” Eberling said.
McDaniel was arrested after he was contacted, and voluntarily went to the police department to talk with authorities. Eberling said that the action was taken after “further into our investigation we determined that there was some evidence to substantiate the allegation.”
Police said that the investigation is ongoing and they are working with GCISD officials to try and determine if there are other victims.
McDaniel, a Colleyville Middle School ‘Teacher of the Year’ award winner, has been with the district since 2009. He has been placed on administrative leave.
