New STAAR Test Results Called ‘Sobering’

View Comments

DALLAS (AP) - If the final standards were already in place, more than half the Texas high school students taking the new, more rigorous end-of-course standardized tests would have failed them.

Texas Education Agency spokeswoman Debbie Ratcliffe is calling results of the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, or STAAR test, released Friday “sobering.”

It was widely known that STAAR was going to be a harder test.

Ratcliffe says the scores make the districts realize “we all have a lot of work do if we’re going to keep these students on track to graduate on time.”

Beginning this year, the tougher passing standards are gradually being phased in and increasing through 2016 to give students time to adjust to the more-difficult STAAR exams.

More children will be in summer school.
