NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) – North Texans are being encouraged to ‘Dump the Pump’ and use public transportation.

Starting today, Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART), the T in Fort Worth, and the Denton County Transportation Authority (DCTA) are all swapping gas receipts for a free, weeklong transit pass.

The free pass campaign kicks off tonight.

“Come out to NRH2O between six and eight in the evening and bring us a gasoline receipt,” DART spokesman Morgan Lyons explained. “If they’ll do that, we can exchange that for a DART pass, a DCTA pass, a “T” pass, something that will let them use any of our services the week of June 17th.”

The three transit agencies felt a joint effort would benefit North Texas most.

“It’s a joint campaign that we’re [DART] conducting with DCTA and The T to encourage people to give transit a try,” Lyons said.

According to the American Public Transportation Association Transit Savings Report, a two person household that downsizes to one car can save – on the average – about $10,000 a year.

Lyons said, given the time of year, North Texans are probably at the pump more often.

“We would imagine folks are filling up more than a little bit these days, now that summer is going on.”

Officials say mass transit also encourages environmental sustainability. North Texas buses run on either clean diesel or natural gas and the DART light rail fleet produces zero emissions.
